Psychologists assist people to develop their life skills in order to function better and are trained to treat people with a mental illness. They frequently work with people who are experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, mood and personality disorders.
Psychologists are able to assess for and diagnose specific mental health conditions.
You can see a psychologist as a private client or Medicare rebates are available if there is a Mental Health Care Plan from a general practitioner. Any offer to bulk-bill is at the discretion of the psychologist.
Provisional psychologists
Provisional psychologists are in the final stages of becoming registered as a psychologist. Provisional registration is the registration type that enables the individual to complete a period of supervised practice that is required to be eligible for general registration as a psychologist.
They are not yet eligible to provide services which attract a Medicare rebate, so fees are generally considerably lower than fully-registered psychologists. There is also no limit to the number of sessions that can be accessed.
